XXIV Slet, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
June 22-25, 2017 The photos are from the slet itself and from Spillville, Iowa, the town where the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak spent the summer in 1893, and where he composed several pieces and most importantly the best known Symphony #9 (from the "New World"). The other photos were taken in the Czech Village of Cedar Rapids where the National Czech and Slovak museum can be found. |

Skupina Sokolu z Toronta se zucastnila oslav 90. narozenin bratra Koristky. Spolu s rodinou a ostatnimi Sokoly a prateli jsme oslavenci
oprali hodne zdravi a spokojenosti.
Bratr Koristka je dlouholety clen Sokola. Nejdrive Jednoty Montreal ted Jednoty Toronto, pobocka KWG.
Stale si rad zajde mezi Sokoly v Kitcheneru trochu si zacvicit nebo pobesedovat.
Jeho cinnost v Sokole byla zasluzna a cinoroda. Byl nacelnikem Sokola Canada a 8 let starostou Sokola Canada.
Brief biography: I left Czechoslovakia when the Communists took over the country in 1948. I was in the Military Air force Academy. I escaped ( with another colleague from the Academy, who lives outside of the Montreal Island) through West Germany to England. We were hoping to join the RAF, since we were flying the same type of the aircraft – Spitfire – as RAF was. Unfortunately the Communist government of Czechoslovakia got wind of it and protested to English government. The British told us that they will keep all our references and in case of a chance in this matter, they will accept us.
So, there was no future for us in England and we both decided to come to Canada in 1952 (we heard so much about Canada from our Instructors, who did their training during the 2nd WW in Saskatchewan.
We landed in Montreal in February 1952. The Czech community was very helpful to us. I was lucky to join Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA) – later Air Canada – first as a draftsman, since back in Czechoslovakia I graduated from the High Industrial College. Later I was lucky to join the Operations Department and became a Flight Engineer on Super Constellation aircraft, before retiring. I was fortunate that Pratt & Whitney of Canada (PWC ) received a large contract from Europe and were looking for somebody, who was familiar with metric system & tolerances. I was the right person. I was hired for six months for the duration of the contract. When this period expired and PWC were happy with my work, they asked me to join them as permanent staff. I did this job for another seven (7) years and enjoyed every minute of it, before I retired permanently. PWC asked me a number of times to come back and help them, especially during the vacation times. I declined this offer. It was time for me to retire. I was lucky to receive (beside the Quebec pension), pension from Air Canada and also from PWC. In 1967 we moved to Toronto and subsequently to Kitchener where I have been living ever since.
I was active member in Sokol Montreal, Toronto and later Kitchener. I enjoyed being in Sokol and all the work I did in the organization
I would like to also mention, that my late wife Anne (who passed away in 2015) used to work for TCA/AC, where we met. We have been blessed with a son Steve and a daughter Kathy, 5 grandchildren and one beautiful great grand daughter.
